Hip Replacement

Skip the wait for hip replacement.

A hip replacement (total hip arthroplasty) replaces a damaged or arthritic hip joint with a durable artificial one, relieving pain and restoring movement. It’s one of the most successful, most-performed orthopaedic operations in the world.

If you’re facing a long public wait in Ireland, the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive lets you have your hip replacement privately at an accredited hospital elsewhere in the EU/EEA, then claim reimbursement from the HSE up to the cost of the same procedure in the Irish public system.

Why patients look abroad

Hip replacement is one of the highest-demand orthopaedic procedures in Ireland, and public waiting times can stretch on while pain and mobility get worse. The cross-border route is a legal, HSE-backed way to be treated sooner without going fully private at Irish prices.

This may be right for you if…

  • Persistent hip or groin pain that limits walking, stairs or sleep
  • Stiffness that makes dressing or getting in and out of a car difficult
  • You’ve been told you need a hip replacement but face a long public wait

Your pathway includes

  • Introduction to an accredited EU hospital and specialist orthopaedic surgeon
  • Help obtaining and organising your GP/consultant referral letter
  • Surgery dates, travel and accommodation coordinated around you
  • Full HSE reimbursement paperwork prepared with you

Common questions

Hip Replacement, answered.

Can I really claim a hip replacement back from the HSE? +

Yes — under the EU Cross-Border Directive you can have a hip replacement (which is publicly available in Ireland) in another EU/EEA country and claim reimbursement from the HSE up to what the same procedure would cost in the Irish public system. We prepare the claim paperwork with you.

How soon could I have surgery? +

Many patients are treated within weeks rather than the long waits common on the Irish public list. Exact timing depends on the hospital and your medical readiness — we’ll give you realistic dates once we understand your situation.

Do I need a referral letter? +

Yes. You’ll need a referral from a public GP or consultant specifying the treatment and the provider abroad. If you don’t have one yet, we’ll explain exactly how to get it.

How much will I get back? +

The HSE reimburses up to the equivalent Irish public cost of a hip replacement. Because private prices in some EU countries are lower, the refund often covers most or all of it. Travel and accommodation aren’t reimbursed — we’ll give you a clear picture before you commit.
